Be spoilt for career choice in the UK’s largest manufacturing industry.
Do you fancy taste testing chocolate or developing crisp flavours for a living? Some of our students have gone on to become buyers, production managers, marketing managers, food technicians and new product developers. Many work for major brand companies, with salaries which are as sweet as their job titles, starting at around £25,000!
Studying food technology, you’ll be part of an exciting industry which is dynamic, fast paced and constantly changing to meet consumer demands. You’ll be encouraged to explore every aspect, from market research to product manufacture and packaging. You’ll study global challenges such as sustainable food production and how to increase nutrition while controlling waste… and you’ll also put classroom theory into practice during sessions in our dairy processing halls ad dedicated butchery, bakery and new product development areas.
We are also establishing a new Institute of Sustainability and Food Innovation in partnership with the University of Chester, an exciting project which will benefit both our diploma and degree students.

Current job role: Butcher, Grants Butchers
Previous course: FDQ Level 2 Diploma in Professional Butchery (Apprenticeship) 2018
“I’m following in the footsteps of my great- grandfather, who owned several butcher’s shops. I think he must have passed on his passion to me!
“I use traditional knife skills alongside modern methods when I’m preparing meat for the counter. You need to know all the different cuts and how best to present them. Customer service is a big part of the job but I also check the daily orders from local pubs, restaurants and cafes, carry out workplace risk assessments and make sure hygiene standards are being met.
“Doing an apprenticeship suited me because I’m practical and find it easier to learn on the job. I feel that the programme encouraged me to grow as a person, particularly when forming relationships with customers and colleagues.”
