Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
This course is for automotive enthusiasts keen to jump-start their career in the motor vehicle industry. Throughout the year you’ll be trained to repair and replace light vehicle components, working on a range of different motor vehicles.
Based primarily in our workshops, classroom time is kept to a minimum. Whilst working in small teams, you’ll learn about vehicle electronics, engine technologies, chassis dynamics and design.

- Petrol and diesel engines
- Transmissions and braking systems
- Welding and fabrication
- Health and safety
- Auto electrics
- Wheels and tyres
- Steering and suspension
- Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths depending on previous qualifications
How long will it take?
- 1 year, full-time
What qualifications do I need to start?
- Some GCSEs at grades 4 or 3/C or D, or
- Foundation Level 1 in Engineering
What qualifications will I gain?
- Level 2 IMI Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths depending on previous qualifications
Course options after this programme
- You can progress on to the Level 3 IMI Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or
- Level 3 Diploma in Agricultural Engineering, or
- An Apprenticeship
